Pokémon Go 0.39.0 IV Changes

Pokémon Go 0.39.0 for Android and 1.9.0 for iOS was announced on September 23 and officially released on September 24. There are some new features for this update and bug fixes. One of these bug fixes although not specified was actually fixing the IV of starter Pokémon caught in the wild.

Here is the changelog:

What’s New

  • Capture location: The location where a Pokémon was caught will now be displayed on their information screen.
  • Pokémon GO Plus and Incense: Trainers can attempt to capture Pokémon they encounter from using Incense with the Pokémon GO Plus accessory.
  • Fixed a bug that caused some users to get stuck on the loading screen, even after restarting the app.
  • Fixed a bug where the camera sometimes moved at slow speeds during battle.
  • Minor bug fixes.

Prior to this, Pokémon with lower Pokédex number will have low attack IV, meaning that trainers would never be able to capture a Bulbasaur (#001) or other starter Pokémon which is higher than 66.7% IV because the attack IV will always be 0 (total IV is based on attack, defense, and stamina IV).

Now that the bug is fixed, the IV is no longer dependant on the Pokédex number so it is actually possible to capture a 100% IV Squirtle or any other starter Pokémon in the wild.
