Pokémon GO Mega Levels Guide (2026): Base, High, Max & Super Max

Pokémon GO’s Mega Evolution system has four levels in 2026—not three. The newest tier, Super Max, offers stronger bonuses and a shorter rest period, but you cannot unlock it just by repeatedly Mega Evolving.

If you are returning to the game, that is the important change. The 2026 updates also introduced Super Mega Raids, Link Charges, and extra Charged Attacks for eligible Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Here is what matters before you spend your Mega Energy. The changes were introduced with Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos in February 2026 and expanded later in the year.

What are Mega Levels?

Mega Evolution temporarily transforms an eligible Pokémon, raising its combat power and enabling useful bonuses. A Mega Evolution lasts eight hours unless you Mega Evolve a different Pokémon first. You can have only one active Mega-Evolved Pokémon at a time.

Its Mega Level is different from its regular Pokémon level or Trainer level. Mega Level reflects how much you have developed that specific individual Pokémon. Two Pokémon of the same species do not automatically share Mega Level progress.

Each time you Mega Evolve the same Pokémon, you work toward higher levels. Higher Mega Levels improve bonuses and reduce the wait before you can Mega Evolve again without paying Mega Energy. The level remains after the eight-hour transformation ends.

All four Mega Levels compared

Mega Level How it works Free re-evolution rest period Main benefit
Base First Mega Evolution 7 days Basic catch and raid bonuses
High Keep Mega Evolving the same Pokémon 5 days Improved XP and Candy XL opportunities
Max Continue building Mega Level progress 3 days Stronger catch bonuses and shorter wait
Super Max Reach Max first, then spend Mega Energy on an eligible Pokémon 24 hours Further CP and catch-bonus improvements

The first three rest periods reflect the traditional system described in The Pokémon Company’s Mega Evolution guide. The fourth tier comes from the 2026 update. Exact energy costs and bonuses can vary by Pokémon; the in-game Mega Level panel is the best place to confirm yours.

Important: Not every Mega-Evolved species can reach Super Max yet. If the option is missing, do not assume your Pokémon is broken. Eligibility is being expanded over time.

How to raise a Pokémon’s Mega Level

  1. Choose your investment. Pick a Pokémon whose Mega form you will actually use for raids, collecting Candy, or catching Pokémon of matching types.
  2. Unlock its first Mega Evolution. Collect the required species-specific Mega Energy and use the Mega Evolve button on its details screen. First-time Mega Energy is required for each individual Pokémon.
  3. Check the Mega icon. Open that Pokémon’s details page and tap the Mega icon to view its current level, bonuses, remaining rest period and progress toward the next level.
  4. Repeat thoughtfully. After the rest period, Mega Evolve again for free. You may spend reduced Mega Energy to Mega Evolve earlier, but there is no need to rush if you are conserving resources.
  5. Upgrade to Super Max if eligible. Once the Pokémon reaches Max, use its Mega Energy to unlock the extra tier. Simply repeating free Mega Evolutions will not complete this final upgrade.

The official Pokémon GO Help Center confirms that Mega Level progress stays with the individual Pokémon and that Super Max requires Mega Energy.

Mega Energy and Link Charges are not the same

These two resources sound related, but they serve different jobs:

  • Mega Energy is used to Mega Evolve and, where supported, increase Mega Levels. Mega Raids are a major source. Some research rewards and walking with an eligible Buddy can also provide it.
  • Link Charges are an entry resource for Mega Raids and Super Mega Raids. They can come from activities such as weekly challenges, Gifts and eligible community check-ins.

For local Mega Raids and Super Mega Raids, the 2026 system allows Link Charges or a Premium Battle Pass. A remote Super Mega Raid requires both a Remote Raid Pass and Link Charges, while a standard remote Mega Raid uses a Remote Raid Pass. Check the raid lobby before committing resources.

One more detail from the later 2026 update: Mega forms with X and Y versions can require separate X and Y Mega Energy. For example, Mega Charizard X uses Charizard Mega Energy X. Do not assume a single balance covers both forms.

How Super Mega Raids work

Super Mega Raids are harder cooperative battles, not ordinary Mega Raids with a new label. Pokémon GO recommends a group of at least eight Trainers, each bringing a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in the battle party; particularly difficult bosses may need more help.

The boss can become enraged and create shields. Your team’s Mega-Evolved Pokémon help break those shields so normal damage can resume. The official explanation notes that Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon and a Ditto transformed into a Mega-Evolved Pokémon cannot break these shields.

Practical advice: arrange a group before spending entry resources, choose a Mega Pokémon with a useful matchup, and confirm you have the required passes or charges. A large group with poorly prepared teams may still struggle.

Extra Charged Attacks: another 2026 bonus

A later official update added an additional Charged Attack to Pokémon eligible for Super Max while they are Mega Evolved. This is not restricted to Pokémon already at Super Max: eligible Pokémon receive the extra attack at any Mega Level, and its power grows with Mega Level.

Examples named by Pokémon GO include Mega Dragonite with Outrage+, Mega Victreebel with Acid Spray+, and Mega Malamar with Psybeam+. The update also introduced Mega Mewtwo X’s Dynamic Punch+ and Mega Mewtwo Y’s Future Sight+.

These additional attacks can be used in GO Battle League where eligible, but the official announcement says they cannot currently be used against Pokémon defending a Gym. Read the 2026 Mega Finale update for the supported Pokémon and restrictions.

Which Mega Pokémon should you level first?

There is no universal best choice. Think about what you do most often:

  • Catch-focused players: choose a Mega Pokémon whose type matches Pokémon you frequently catch. Matching types can increase Candy and XP, and higher Mega Levels improve your chance of Candy XL.
  • Raid-focused players: prioritize Mega Pokémon that support your regular raid groups and counter types you expect to face.
  • Limited Mega Energy: develop one useful Pokémon at a time, wait for free re-evolution periods, and save your energy for first unlocks or a worthwhile Super Max upgrade.

Remember that bonuses are tied to the currently active Mega-Evolved Pokémon. A Pokémon sitting in storage at Max Level does not provide its active Mega bonuses.

Quick questions

Does Super Max reset after eight hours?

No. The temporary Mega form ends, but the Pokémon’s earned Mega Level stays. You can use the next free re-evolution after its rest period.

Can every Mega Pokémon reach Super Max?

No. The 2026 launch began with selected Mega Pokémon, and eligibility is being expanded. Check the in-game Mega Level panel for your specific Pokémon.

Is Super Max the same as a Super Mega Raid?

No. Super Max is a Mega Level for your Pokémon. A Super Mega Raid is a difficult multiplayer raid encounter that can reward Mega Energy.

The takeaway

Start with one useful Mega Pokémon, build its Mega Level, and learn its free rest cycle. Super Max is a valuable longer-term target for eligible Pokémon, but it is not worth spending scarce Mega Energy without a plan. Check your Mega Level screen, then build a small team that supports how you actually play.
