Thinking about buying Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension? The new physical package is convenient, but it is not a completely new game. Knowing what is already available separately could save you from buying the same adventure twice.
The bundle arrived on October 29, 2026. It combines the Switch 2 Edition of the base game and the Mega Dimension expansion on one game card, according to Pokémon’s September 30 announcement. Here is what that means for new players, returning players, and original Nintendo Switch owners.
What is included in the Mega Dimension bundle?
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: the main Lumiose City adventure, featuring real-time Pokémon battles, wild zones, and Mega Evolution.
- Mega Dimension DLC: the additional story that takes you beyond the familiar city into Hyperspace Lumiose.
- One physical game card: the combined game-and-expansion package, rather than a standalone new sequel.
- A 100 Ultra Balls purchase bonus: Nintendo says the physical package includes an insert with a redemption code. Check your copy and the redemption instructions.
These are the components described in Nintendo’s US product listing. Do not confuse the 100 Ultra Balls bonus with a new Pokémon, a paid subscription, or an exclusive story chapter.
Is this new content or a repackaged release?
Mostly a new way to buy existing content. Pokémon Legends: Z-A originally launched on October 16, 2025. The Mega Dimension additional story became available on December 10, 2025, according to Nintendo’s DLC listing. The October 2026 release is a combined physical edition of those experiences.
That distinction matters if you already own the game. A new box and one-card convenience do not automatically mean you need a second copy. The value is different for someone starting from zero versus someone who has already completed the main adventure.
Does the Switch 2 game card work on the original Nintendo Switch?
Yes, with an important limitation. Pokémon explicitly says the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in this bundle can also be played on the original Nintendo Switch. However, playing on the older system gives you the Nintendo Switch software experience, not the Switch 2-specific enhancements.
On Nintendo Switch 2, the official product description highlights enhanced resolution and smoother frame rates. On the original Switch, do not expect those hardware-specific improvements merely because the card says “Switch 2 Edition.”
If you plan to upgrade your console later, that cross-generation compatibility may be useful. If you intend to stay on the original Switch, judge the package by its game and DLC content rather than performance marketing.
What does Mega Dimension add to the story?
The expansion continues the story after the main adventure. Mysterious distortions around Lumiose City lead to Hyperspace Lumiose, an unfamiliar version of the city. The Mythical Pokémon Hoopa is connected to portals into that space.
Nintendo describes working with a baker named Ansha to collect Berries and make donuts that help awaken Hoopa’s power and provide useful effects. The story also involves Korrina, Team MZ, and unusual Pokémon encounters. Some Pokémon in hyperspace can have levels that exceed the usual level-100 limit.
Plan to finish the main story first. Nintendo’s description places the additional adventure after completion of the base game. Buying the combined package does not mean you can skip directly to every DLC feature at the beginning of a fresh save.

Already own Legends: Z-A? Check your options before buying
If you already own the base game, buying the whole bundle may be unnecessary. Nintendo lists Mega Dimension DLC separately, and its Switch 2 Edition store page also describes an upgrade pack for eligible owners of the Nintendo Switch version.
On the US Nintendo store page checked for this guide, the Mega Dimension DLC is listed at US$29.99. That is the DLC listing price, not a verified price for the new physical bundle. Prices, taxes, editions, and availability may vary by country or retailer.
Before spending money, check which version of the base game you own, whether the DLC is already attached to your Nintendo Account, and whether you need the Switch 2 upgrade pack. Do not assume a DLC purchase also upgrades the base game or that an upgrade pack includes the DLC.
The official Switch 2 Edition listing explains the upgrade path and separately identifies the expansion.
How does the 100 Ultra Balls bonus work?
Nintendo’s listing says the physical bundle includes an insert containing a code for 100 Ultra Balls. Redemption uses the game’s Mystery Gift feature, found through the Link Play menu once it becomes available in the story.
Expect to need an internet connection and a linked Nintendo Account. Nintendo states that a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to claim this bonus, and that Link Play normally unlocks after approximately 1–1.5 hours of gameplay. The item can be redeemed only once per save file.
Follow the instructions printed with your actual code and shown in the game; the official listing’s wording about the redemption option is not perfectly clear. Do not assume the bonus applies to every digital edition or secondhand copy without checking eligibility.
Which version should you choose?
- New player with Switch 2: the combined physical edition is a straightforward way to get the main game and expansion together, if the local price makes sense.
- New player with original Switch: the card is playable, but Switch 2 performance enhancements will not apply. Compare local pricing against the original Switch game plus DLC.
- Existing owner: compare the separate Mega Dimension DLC and any needed Switch 2 upgrade pack before considering a full rebuy.
One more practical note: Nintendo says the game does not support Save Data Cloud backup. Check your console’s save-transfer options separately if changing hardware. An online membership is required for online multiplayer features, but not for the Ultra Balls Mystery Gift redemption described above.
Quick buyer checklist
- Confirm whether you already own the base game and Mega Dimension DLC.
- Check whether you will play on Switch 2 or the original Switch.
- Compare the physical bundle’s actual local retailer price with buying missing components separately.
- If the 100 Ultra Balls bonus matters to you, verify that your copy includes an unused code and check its terms.
- Allow time to finish the main story before expecting the expansion’s full story content.
- Check storage requirements and online-feature terms on the store page for your region.
FAQ
Is Mega Dimension a separate full game?
No. It is additional content for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The October 2026 physical bundle includes both the base game and the DLC.
Do I need Nintendo Switch 2 to play the bundle?
No. Pokémon says the Switch 2 Edition game card also works on the original Nintendo Switch, but without Switch 2-specific enhancements.
Does the bundle include a free Pokémon?
The specifically advertised physical purchase bonus is a code for 100 Ultra Balls. For a separate, time-limited Mystery Gift tied to the bundle launch, see our verified Spewpa and Vivillon guide; that is a different promotion with its own deadline.
Bottom line
This edition makes the most sense for someone who wants both Legends: Z-A and Mega Dimension in one physical purchase. If you already own the game, check the separate DLC and upgrade options first. The most important difference is not the packaging: it is whether your console can use the Switch 2 enhancements and whether you already own the content.
