Charcadet has two excellent evolutions in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet—but leveling it up won’t trigger either one. To get Armarouge or Ceruledge, you need a special armor item from a trader in Zapapico.
The catch is that the trader offers a different item depending on your game version. Here’s the exact route, including how to collect the materials and get the evolution from the other version.
Charcadet evolution: Scarlet vs. Violet
| Game | Evolution | Armor item | Trade-in materials | Final typing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Scarlet | Armarouge | Auspicious Armor | 10 Bronzor Fragments | Fire / Psychic |
| Pokémon Violet | Ceruledge | Malicious Armor | 10 Sinistea Chips | Fire / Ghost |
Important distinction: the game version controls which armor the Zapapico trader offers. The item controls Charcadet’s evolution. If a friend trades you the opposite armor, you can use it in your own game. Charcadet has no minimum evolution level.
The official Charcadet Pokédex confirms its two branches and the evolved Pokémon’s types.
Step 1: Catch a Charcadet
Charcadet is a small, red, Fire-type Pokémon found in Paldea. One early area worth searching is South Province (Area Three), outside Mesagoza’s eastern exit. It is easy to overlook in the grass or among rocks, so slow down and scan the ground rather than racing through on your ride Pokémon.
Don’t worry about catching a particular level. Unlike a normal level-based evolution, the armor can be used when you obtain it. You can also wait until you’ve found a Charcadet with a nature or stats you prefer; the process is the same.
Step 2: Get the materials for your version
Pokémon Scarlet: collect 10 Bronzor Fragments
Find and battle Bronzor, the floating Steel/Psychic Pokémon often seen near ruins. The ruins around South Province (Area Two) are a practical place to begin, with other Bronzor habitats across Paldea.
Bronzor drops Bronzor Fragments as battle materials. You need 10 fragments total, not necessarily 10 separate Bronzor: check your Bag because the amount collected per encounter can vary.
Pokémon Violet: collect 10 Sinistea Chips
Look for Sinistea, a tiny Ghost-type Pokémon shaped like a teacup. You can find it around East Province (Area Three), including near Zapapico. The area around Alfornada is another place to search, although its wild Pokémon may be tougher if you’re early in the adventure.
Defeat Sinistea to collect 10 Sinistea Chips. Since it is so small, move slowly and watch for its outline. There is no need to find a special Sinistea form for this exchange.
Step 3: Trade materials for armor in Zapapico
- Travel to Zapapico, the town in eastern Paldea.
- Locate the NPC standing by a small fountain near the town’s eastern Pokémon Center.
- Speak to the trader. In Scarlet, exchange 10 Bronzor Fragments for Auspicious Armor. In Violet, exchange 10 Sinistea Chips for Malicious Armor.
- Open your Bag, select the armor under Other Items, and choose Use this item on Charcadet.
The evolution happens immediately. You don’t need to trade Charcadet itself, raise its friendship, or wait for a particular time of day.
If you’re unsure which NPC to speak with, see the location instructions in Nintendo Life’s Scarlet/Violet guide. The game’s armor exchange is also detailed in GameSpot’s walkthrough.
How to get both Armarouge and Ceruledge in one game
You do not need to buy the other game just to register both evolutions. The easiest option is to trade for the evolved Pokémon you are missing.
Alternatively, ask a friend playing the opposite version to obtain the required armor, give it to a Pokémon as a held item, and trade that Pokémon to you. Take the armor from the traded Pokémon, then use it on your own Charcadet. That lets you evolve a Charcadet you caught yourself.
Remember the distinction: the armor is held only to transport it during the trade. Holding it does not evolve Charcadet; you must select the armor from the Bag and use it.
Playing together in a Union Circle does not change the version-specific armor offered by your own Zapapico trader. You still need the opposite item through a trade if you want the other branch.
Armarouge or Ceruledge: which should you choose?
Both are strong Fire-type options, but they suit different teams. Armarouge adds Psychic typing and generally emphasizes special attacks. Its signature move, Armor Cannon, hits hard but lowers its defensive stats after use.
Ceruledge adds Ghost typing and generally favors physical attacks. Its signature move, Bitter Blade, deals damage while restoring some of Ceruledge’s HP. That makes it appealing for players who like a more self-sustaining attacker.
Neither is universally better. Look at what your team already covers: if you want a Fire/Psychic attacker, consider Armarouge; if a Fire/Ghost attacker better complements your team, Ceruledge is the natural fit. You can compare their official Pokédex entries at Armarouge and Ceruledge.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for a level-up: Charcadet won’t evolve through experience alone. Use the appropriate armor.
- Farming the wrong materials: Scarlet’s trader asks for Bronzor Fragments; Violet’s asks for Sinistea Chips.
- Giving the armor to hold: A held armor item doesn’t activate evolution. Select Use from your Bag.
- Assuming multiplayer changes your trader: Visiting a friend’s world doesn’t automatically switch which armor your game offers.
- Confusing game rules: These are the evolution mechanics in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, not the progression rules in Pokémon GO or Pokémon UNITE.
Quick FAQ
Can Charcadet evolve at level 1?
There is no level requirement for its armor-based evolution. If you have an eligible Charcadet and the correct armor, you can use the item.
Can I get more than one armor item?
Yes. The Zapapico material exchange can be repeated, so you can collect more Bronzor Fragments or Sinistea Chips and obtain additional copies of your version’s armor.
Can I evolve Charcadet into Ceruledge in Scarlet?
Yes, if you obtain Malicious Armor through trading. Similarly, a Violet player can use traded Auspicious Armor to obtain Armarouge.
Do I need the DLC?
No. Charcadet and the Zapapico armor exchange are part of the base Scarlet/Violet adventure.
The takeaway
For Scarlet, collect 10 Bronzor Fragments. For Violet, collect 10 Sinistea Chips. Take them to the fountain-side trader in Zapapico, get your armor, and use it on Charcadet. If you want both evolutions, trade for the opposite armor or the evolved Pokémon itself.
